O.C. business sales spike 36% in May, tracker reports | sale, dipped ...

Although the sale of Orange County businesses dipped slightly in May, the number of firms that changed hands ? 128 ? was up 36.2% from a year earlier, according to BizBen.com, a website that specializes in California businesses for sale.

The market for existing businesses has struggled since the mortgage crisis in 2008 because people interested in buying established firms have had difficulty qualifying for loans or pulling equity out of their homes or other real estate to finance the transactions.

Year-over-year sales have been improving slightly in recent months, an indication the lending market may be loosening.

The improvement in sales in Orange County was stronger than in surrounding counties and statewide, according to BizBen.com data.

In fact, year-over-year, business sales in Los Angeles County declined by 5.3% to 287 transactions. Throughout California 1,145 businesses were sold in May, up 7.2% from a year earlier and up 4.9% from April, according to BizBen.com.

Riverside County business sales grew 9.3% and San Bernardino County sales grew 30.2%, but San Diego, like Los Angeles, saw business sales slip 3.8%.

In Orange County, the city of Anaheim had the most sales, 74, followed by Santa Ana, 45.
