Clinton retires debt from 2008 campaign

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has paid off the outstanding debt from her 2008 presidential campaign.

Campaign finance reports filed Tuesday show Clinton's campaign made payments of $73,000 on Dec. 31 to a consulting firm run by former adviser and pollster Mark Penn. That accounted for the last part of the debt going back to her primary campaign against Barack Obama.

Clinton had owed vendors about $12 million at the end of June 2008.

As a Cabinet member, Clinton faced fundraising restrictions to retire her debt but someone could do it on her behalf.

Former President Bill Clinton sent a fundraising email to his wife's supporters in late November, asking for their help in retiring the debt. The campaign raised about $158,000 in the last three months of 2012.
