WASHINGTON (AP) ? With big, automatic budget cuts about to kick in, House Republicans are turning to mapping strategy for the next showdown just a month away, when a government shutdown instead of just a slowdown will be at stake.
Both topics are sure to come up at the White House meeting Friday between President Barack Obama and top congressional leaders, including Republican House Speaker John Boehner. A breakthrough on replacing or easing the imminent across-the-board spending cuts still seems unlikely at the first face-to-face discussion between Obama and Republican leaders this year.
To no one's surprise, even as a dysfunctional Washington appears incapable of averting a crisis over economy-rattling spending cuts, it may be lurching toward another over a possible shutdown.
Republicans are planning for a vote next week on a bill to fund the day-to-day operations of the government through the Sept. 30 end of the 2013 fiscal year ? while keeping in place the new $85 billion in cuts of 5 percent to domestic agencies and 8 percent to the military.
The need to keep the government's doors open and lights on ? or else suffer the first government shutdown since 1996 ? requires the GOP-dominated House and the Democratic-controlled Senate to agree. Right now they hardly see eye to eye.
The House GOP plan, unveiled to the rank and file on Wednesday, would award the Pentagon and the Department of Veterans Affairs with their line-by-line budgets, for a more-targeted rather than indiscriminate batch of military cuts, but would deny domestic agencies the same treatment. And that has whipped up opposition from veteran Democratic senators on the Appropriations Committee. Domestic agencies would see their budgets frozen almost exactly as they are, which would mean no money for new initiatives such as cybersecurity or for routine increases for programs such as low-income housing.
"We're not going to do that," said Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa. "Of course not."
Any agreement needs to pass through a gantlet of House tea party conservatives intent on preserving the across-the-board cuts and Senate Democrats pressing for action on domestic initiatives, even at the risk of creating a foot-tall catchall spending bill.
There's also this: GOP leaders have calculated that the automatic cuts arriving on Friday need to be in place in order for them to be able to muster support from conservatives for the catchall spending bill to keep the government running. That's because many staunch conservatives want to preserve the cuts even as defense hawks and others fret about the harm that might do to the military and the economy. If the automatic cuts are dealt with before the government-wide funding bill gets a vote, there could be a conservative revolt.
"The overall sequester levels must hold," said Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif.
Little to no progress has been made so far between House and Senate leaders and the White House, and given the hard feelings engulfing Washington, there's no guarantee that this problem can be solved, even though the stakes ? a shutdown of non-essential government programs after March 27 ? carry more risk than the across-the-board cuts looming on Friday.
The funding plan for the rest of the fiscal year will be a main topic at the White House meeting on Friday, the March 1 deadline day for averting the across-the-board cuts.
Obama, speaking to a group of business executives Wednesday night, said the cuts would be a "tumble downward" for the economy, though he acknowledged it could takes weeks before many Americans feel the full impact of the budget shrinking.
The warring sides in Washington have spent this week assigning blame rather than seeking a bipartisan way out. In a glimpse of the state of debate on Wednesday, Republicans and the White House bickered over whether the cuts would be under way by the time Friday's meeting started. A spokesman for Boehner said they would be in place; the White House countered that Obama would in fact have until midnight Friday to set them in motion.
The cumbersome annual ritual of passing annual agency spending bills collapsed entirely last year ? not a single one of the 12 annual appropriations bills for the budget year that began back in October has passed Congress ? and Congress has to act by March 27 to prevent a partial shutdown of the government.
By freezing budgets for domestic agencies, the Republican plan would deny an increase for a big cybersecurity initiative, additional money to modernize the U.S. nuclear arsenal and money to build new Coast Guard cutters. GOP initiatives such as more money for the Small Business Administration or fossil fuels research would be hurt as well, but there's little appetite for the alternative, which is to stack more than $1 trillion worth of spending bills together for a single up-or-down vote.
But the GOP move to add the line-by-line spending bills for the Pentagon and veterans' programs to the catchall spending bill would give the military much-sought increases for force readiness and the Veterans Administration additional funding for health care.
That approach has few fans in the White House, which is seeking money to implement Obama's signature efforts to overhaul financial regulation and the nation's health care system, or within the Democratic Senate, where members of the Appropriations Committee want to add a stack of bills covering domestic priorities such as homeland security, NASA and federal law enforcement agencies like the FBI.
"You need balance," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. "We feel as strongly about the domestic side as we do defense."
The catchall spending measure, known as a continuing resolution or CR inside Washington, was originally seen as a potential must-pass measure to avert Friday's cuts or make them less severe. But no serious talks to avert the cuts have been under way.
On Thursday, Democrats will force a vote on a measure that would forestall the automatic cuts through the end of the year, replacing them with longer-term cuts to the Pentagon and cash payments to farmers and installing a minimum 30 percent tax rate on income exceeding $1 million. But that plan is virtually certain to be toppled by a GOP-led filibuster vote.
Republicans in turn are considering offering a measure that would give Obama authority to propose a rewrite to the 2013 budget to redistribute the cuts. Obama would be unable to cut defense by more than the $43 billion reduction that the Pentagon currently faces, and would also be unable to raise taxes to undo the cuts. The GOP plan would allow a resulting Obama proposal to go into effect unless Congress passed a resolution to overturn it.
The idea is that money could be transferred from lower-priority accounts to accounts funding air traffic control or meat inspection. But the White House says that such moves would offer only slight relief. At the same time, however, it could take pressure off of Congress to address the sequester.
In the House, where Republicans in the past Congress passed legislation to replace the cuts, Boehner has said it's now up to Obama and the Senate to figure a way out. The Senate never took up the House-passed bills, which expired when the new Congress was seated in January.

UNC sexual assault victim faces expulsion for talking
(UNC.edu/Flickr)
A University of North Carolina sexual assault victim has been charged with violating the school's honor code and creating a hostile environment for her attacker by speaking out about her ordeal.
Landen Gambill?a sophomore who last spring reported being raped by a student she says is still on the school's Chapel Hill campus?was notified of the charge last week in an email from the school's graduate attorney general. The email, published by Jezebel.com, reads in part:
You are being charged with the following Honor Code violation(s):
I.C.1.c. - Disruptive or intimidating behavior that willfully abuses, disparages, or otherwise interferes with another (other than on the basis of protected classifications identified and addressed in the University's Policy on Prohibited Harassment and Discrimination) so as to adversely affect their academic pursuits, opportunities for University employment, participation in University-sponsored extracurricular activities, or opportunities to benefit from other aspects of University Life.
The matter has been turned over to UNC's Honor Court. If found guilty, Gambill could be subject to a range of sanctions, including probation, suspension or even expulsion.
The charge came approximately a month after a group of current and former UNC students including Gambill and Melinda Manning?the school's former assistant dean of students?filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights alleging that school officials had pressured Manning into underreporting sex offense cases.
An avatar used by Gambill's supporters (Twitter)
Gambill says that when she reported the assault to the Honor Court, she was met with resistance. Via the Daily Tarheel:
?The woman student said to me, ?Landen, as a woman, I know that if that had happened to me, I would?ve broken up with him the first time it happened. Will you explain to me why you didn?t??? she said.
Gambill said the court used her history of clinical depression and her suicide attempt?which she said was a result of her abusive relationship?against her.
?They implied that I was emotionally unstable and couldn?t be telling the truth because I had attempted suicide,? she said.
"This type of gross injustice is unacceptable," Gambill wrote on her Facebook page. "It's important to me that we continue to advocate for the rights of survivors?not just because it affects me personally but because I desperately hope no one has to go [through] anything like this again."
Some of Gambill's supporters have also taken to Facebook and Twitter, changing their avatars to say "I Stand With Landen" and tweeting messages with the hashtag #standwithlanden.
Colby Bruno, managing attorney for the national Victim Rights Law Center, told InsideHigherEd.com the code violation is "outrageous.? For the university "to entertain this as a viable claim is a problem, because it's not,? Bruno said.
The university would not comment on Gambill's case, citing federal privacy laws. But at a board meeting last month, Leslie Strohm, UNC's vice chancellor and general counsel, told trustees "the allegations with respect to the underreporting of sexual assault are false, they are untrue, and they are just plain wrong."
[Related: Fox News co-host apologizes for campus rape remark]
"UNC has the potential at this point to stand up for sexual assault survivors," Carey Hanlin, editor-in-chief of UNC's Campus Blueprint, wrote in an editorial. "By telling Landen Gambill that she could face expulsion for saying that she was raped, by denying the allegations that administrators ignored the best interests of sexual assault survivors, and by implying that it is not acceptable to challenge the school system on its inability to help survivors of sexual assault, UNC fails to be a beacon."
Rape on campus is a problem--and not just at UNC.
In 2010, the Department of Justice estimated that 25 percent of college women "will be victims of rape or attempted rape before they graduate within a four-year college period," and that schools with more than 6,000 students "average one rape per day during the school year.?
According to New York University's "National Statistics about Sexual Violence on College Campuses," fewer than 5 percent of such cases are reported to law enforcement.

Auction of recluse's gold nets $3.5 million

This Monday, Dec. 17, 2012 photo shows the Carson City, Nev. home of Walter Samaszko Jr. A crew sent to clean out Samaszko's house found more than $7.4 million worth of gold coins, bars and bullion left behind in the garage after his death in June. About 135 pounds (61 kilograms) of Walter Samaszko Jr.'s gold coins will be auctioned off in 11 lots Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, in a courtroom to pay government taxes and fees. Carson City Clerk Recorder Alan Glover says the auction will only include about half of the trove left behind when the reclusive man died in his modest Carson City home last year. An exhaustive search identified California substitute teacher Arlene Magdanz as Samaszko's first cousin and sole heir to the fortune that was decades in the making. (AP Photo/Scott Sonner)
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) ? The tale of a mysterious Nevada recluse's gold reached a new chapter Tuesday when a portion of the trove raked in more than $3.5 million at auction.
It was the allure of mystery that pulled some bidders to the courtroom, but for others, it was the sheer value of a collection unknown to the public before Walter Samaszko Jr. was found dead in his modest ranch-style home last year.
Regardless of motivation, those who converged on the auction could sense the immense value of the treasure upon arriving.
There were numerous guards at the entrance, then more in the hallway outside the courtroom, and finally several with bullet proof vests and others with helmets inside the room holding the gold.
Five bidders diligently inspected the 11 lots of gold displayed in plastic sleeves, tubes and felt jewelry display boxes heavily guarded room before the bidding wars began.
By the time all sales were final, however, one bidder had secured nine of the 11 lots for sale.
Carson City's Alan Rowe of Northern Nevada Coin spent $617,000 from his own company, and another $2 million on behalf of the Illinois-based Rare Coin Company of America Inc. It was the uniqueness of the gold that drove his bidding, he said.
"Every one of us has a little hoarder nature in our culture and we all like to have things, but to this degree is quite a story," Rowe told reporters after the auction, adding that the metal value "is not as exciting as the story itself, there's actually value to the story."
He added that some of the coins will be available in the store or online for locals hoping to snag a piece of history. Others, he said, will be marketed nationally and likely on television.
This auction was only for the bullion coins ? items that are not necessarily rare, just expensive because they are made of gold. There will likely be a second auction for the larger portion of the collection which is comprised of the rare coins, said Alan Glover, the public administrator for Samaszko's estate.
"They're buying and bidding on an ounce of gold, pure gold by the weight," Glover said.
In total, about 150 pounds of gold was sold at Tuesday's auction. About $800,000 will pay various fees and estate taxes, and the rest of the profits go to a substitute teacher in San Rafael, Calif., who is the first cousin and sole heir to the trove of Walter Samaszko Jr.
Because of the other coins' rarity, that sale is expected to net higher profits.
James Mitchell of Reno's Silver State Coin and a California-based group named Spectrum Group International Inc. grabbed the two lots not purchased by Rowe or his partners.
Mitchell landed the lot of 4,600 Mexican dos pesos, the largest number of coins in a single lot. He said the story posed no additional value to him.
"It had the most potential for profit," Mitchell said of his purchase. "There was one lot I wanted more, but this one will have to do."
That lot, a collection of 620 Canadian Maple Leafs, was the largest in terms of weight and the coins were the purest gold available. It fetched $1.16 million from Rowe and the Rare Coin Company of America.
No one knows exactly when the collection began, or why Samaszko never sold it. Frankly, no one knew anything about him even though he lived in the same neighborhood for decades. Weeks passed before authorities even discovered he had died in his modest Carson City home. A coroner said he died of heart problems.
When cleanup crews arrived, they made the startling discovery of the 69-year-old man's vast collection of thousands of gold coins worth millions of dollars stashed in old ammunition boxes in his garage.
Officials discovered the trove neatly wrapped and stored mostly in ammunition boxes stacked on top of each other. There were more than 2,900 Austrian coins, many from 1915; more than 5,000 from Mexico; at least 500 from Britain; 300 U.S. gold pieces, some dating to 1880; and more than 100 U.S. gold pieces as old as the 1890s.
Among the coins were meticulous records of the purchases dating back to at least 1964, when gold averaged about $35 per ounce. The precious metal currently sells for more than $1,600 an ounce.
Authorities believe that his mother, who lived with Samaszko until her death in 1992, purchased most of the coins.
Despite the millions of dollars in his garage, Samaszko didn't appear to lead a luxurious life. Records show he only withdrew about $500 a month to pay modest bills. He died with $1,200 in a checking account and just a bit more than $165,000 in a money market and mutual fund account.
Since learning of her inheritance, Magdanz has shunned publicity and not made any comments about the fortune.

Terry Mills' Gutterball | ALP NT
Shadow Minister for Sport and Recreation, Ken Vowles, said Territory sporting and recreation organisations face increased fees and reduced membership as a result of Terry Mills? unfair PowerWater price hikes.
?Terry Mills? massive price hikes are hurting everyone and everything, and will adversely impact on all levels and disciplines of sport and recreation,? Mr Vowles said.
Mr Vowles said the NT Tenpin Bowling Association have been advised about increased lane rentals of 43 per cent ($17.50 to $25.00) due to the CLP?s price hikes.
?The Territory has some of the best tenpin bowlers in the country, but to stay competitive our bowlers need to train on a regular basis,? Mr Vowles said.
?Some of the highly competitive members will be paying up to $120 per week to practice, along with weekly competition fees of $35, and that?s crippling costs for most people.
?Many sporting venues are doing their best to the CLP?s price hikes, but the reality is most venues have no other option but to pass increased running costs to the consumer.
?NT Tenpin Bowling, and other sporting clubs and groups are now faced with a loss in membership as people try to save money to cover their personal increased power costs,? Mr Vowles said.
?These price hikes will also have a negative impact on fundraising opportunities for sporting groups, who also face a loss of sponsorship as corporations tighten their spending to make ends meet.
?Sport and recreation is a huge part of our lifestyle and it is important that our children grow up healthy and active by participating in sport ? but it seems this Government is hell bent on making it as hard as possible for us to participate.
?Sport and recreation organisations still feel very angry about the scrapping of this year?s Arafura Games.?

Alcatel's MWC wares: hands-on with One Touch Snap and Scribe Easy
Alongside the other Alcatel notables at this year's Mobile World Congress were the One Touch Scribe Easy and the Snap. The One Touch Scribe Easy is a 5-inch WVGA display, 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU, 5-megapixel shooter, a large 2500 mAh battery to power the whole thing and a clever magnetic cover called the MagicFlip. Connectivity options include quad-band GSM and HSPA+ in either 900 / 2100 or 850 / 1900 / 2100MHz. Attached to the MagicFlip is a small stylus that Alcatel demoed to us using Vision Object's very impressive Myscript Calculator. Scribble down a formula and the app converts your scribbles to numbers and fills in the blanks where your equal sign ends up. While the Scribe Easy's display isn't comparable to its twin the Scribe Easy HD, it's more than reasonable for what we'd expect is going to be an inexpensive handset when it launches in March this year.
Moving on is the One Touch Snap with a 4.5-inch QHD display, 8-megapixel camera, 4Mbps HSPA+ and quad-band GSM. Housing quality was very good here and at just 9mm thin it fits well in the pocket. The Snap will ship in silver, white, or cloudy white colors. Again, we don't have pricing or a firm release date but as Alcatel explained the price really can shift depending on market. Have a look at the gallery of these two just below.

Ultrasound reveals autism risk at birth
Low-birth-weight babies with a particular brain abnormality are at greater risk for autism, according to a new study that could provide doctors a signpost for early detection of the still poorly understood disorder.
Led by Michigan State University, the study found that low-birth-weight newborns were seven times more likely to be diagnosed with autism later in life if an ultrasound taken just after birth showed they had enlarged ventricles, cavities in the brain that store spinal fluid. The results appear in the Journal of Pediatrics.
"For many years there's been a lot of controversy about whether vaccinations or environmental factors influence the development of autism, and there's always the question of at what age a child begins to develop the disorder," said lead author Tammy Movsas, clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at MSU and medical director of the Midland County Department of Public Health.
"What this study shows us is that an ultrasound scan within the first few days of life may already be able to detect brain abnormalities that indicate a higher risk of developing autism."
Movsas and colleagues reached that conclusion by analyzing data from a cohort of 1,105 low-birth-weight infants born in the mid-1980s. The babies had cranial ultrasounds just after birth so the researchers could look for relationships between brain abnormalities in infancy and health disorders that showed up later. Participants also were screened for autism when they were 16 years old, and a subset of them had a more rigorous test at 21, which turned up 14 positive diagnoses.
Ventricular enlargement is found more often in premature babies and may indicate loss of a type of brain tissue called white matter.
"This study suggests further research is needed to better understand what it is about loss of white matter that interferes with the neurological processes that determine autism," said co-author Nigel Paneth, an MSU epidemiologist who helped organize the cohort. "This is an important clue to the underlying brain issues in autism."
Prior studies have shown an increased rate of autism in low-birth-weight and premature babies, and earlier research by Movsas and Paneth found a modest increase in symptoms among autistic children born early or late.

Winter storm rakes Midwest with snow, freezing rain
Record snowfall in Wichita, Kansas, creates havoc at the airport where crews had to dig out a plane stuck on the tarmac. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.
By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News
A winter storm raked the Great Lakes states Friday, contributing to dozens of car crashes, and headed for the Northeast, which braced for its third straight weekend of significant snow.
The Weather Channel said parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan would end up with as much as 6 inches of snow.
In Minnesota alone, the State Patrol said there were 124 crashes during the morning commute, killing one driver and injuring 23, NBC affiliate KARE in Minneapolis reported.
Ice complicated travel in Ohio. In Cleveland, a United Airlines 737 skidded off the runway into grass and snow after landing from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. There were no reported injuries, and the passengers were taken by bus to the terminal.
The runway was in good condition at the time of the landing, said Jacqueline Mayo, a spokeswoman for the Cleveland airport. Freezing rain had just moved out of the area.
The winter storm is expected to move into the Northeast and deliver a third straight weekend of significant snow. Interior sections of New England could get as much as a foot.
Crews in Massachusetts, which has already exhausted its $45 million storm budget, readied piles of salt and sand and thousands of pieces of equipment, NBC affiliate WHDH in Boston reported.
Full coverage from weather.com
On Thursday, as the storm hammered the Plains, a United regional jet from Denver got stuck in the snow after landing at the airport in Wichita, Kan. Workers tried to clear a path so that buses could collect the passengers, but the tarmac was too slick, and the plane was stuck for about two hours.
Passengers said that flight attendants passed out cookies and that passengers and crew stayed upbeat.
?By far the most entertaining delay I?ve ever had in my life,? passenger Joshua Locke said. ?This has just been laughable to me.?
Wichita reported 14.2 inches of snow, the second-largest total on record there. More remote parts of Kansas got 18 inches. Omaha, Neb., reported 8 inches and Sioux City, Iowa, 10 inches.
On Friday, O?Hare airport in Chicago reported delays of an hour and a half, and Cincinnati reported more than 45 minutes. The airport in Kansas City, shut down earlier this week in heavy snow, reopened, but most morning flights were delayed.
In Cincinnati, a semi lost control on an icy overpass, leaving one wheel dangling over the edge. No one was hurt, but part of Interstate 71 was closed for a time, and the truck was leaking fuel, NBC affiliate WLWT in Cincinnati reported.
Earlier this week, the storm forced road closures in California and delays in a pro golf tournament in Arizona, where it dusted cactus-tops with snow.

The storm was blamed for at least two other deaths Wednesday. A 19-year-old Nebraska woman was killed in a two-car collision, and an 18-year-old man in Oklahoma died when his truck slid into a tractor-trailer on a slushy highway.
And the next storm was already on the way: Forecasters said it would sweep through the Rockies over the weekend, delivering up to a foot of snow to Colorado and up to 6 inches in Wyoming and Utah.
Reuters contributed to this report.
Much of the Midwest is covered in a blanket of white as a massive winter storm has covered parts of Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas with over a foot of snow. NBC's John Yang reports.

Malloy joins critics of GOP on budget impasse
WASHINGTON -- Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and other Democratic governors got a pep talk Friday from President Obama about the impact of the looming March 1 sequestration, and they joined in pinning the blame for the impasse on Republicans.
Malloy, in town for the winter meeting of the National Governors Association, told reporters that Obama was finding it difficult to negotiate with congressional Republicans.
"There is no leadership in the Republican Congress or the Senate and maybe that's the big problem -- there's nobody to deal with anymore," Malloy said, adding that House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., have problems within their own party caucuses.
Some Republican lawmakers are adamantly opposed to Obama's approach to the budget deficit, saying the president doesn't want to cut spending sharply enough but instead wants to rely on tax increases. They've also expressed anger that, in their view, he's unfairly portraying them as the side that is refusing to compromise.
Malloy stood bare-headed in sleet and freezing rain outside the White House as he and other Democratic governors -- Peter Shumlin of Vermont, Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, Martin O'Malley of Maryland and John Hickenlooper of Colorado -- held a news conference after meeting with Obama.
Shumlin, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, said Democratic governors should urge Republican governors to press their GOP colleagues in Congress to adopt the Obama approach.
The message to Republican governors, he said, is: "Speak up! Don't be part of the problem."
The NGA convenes here Saturday for two days of conferences.
Sequestration means that $85 billion in phased federal spending cuts kick in starting March 1. The reductions are the result of a 2011 law that Obama and Congress enacted as a draconian incentive for the administration and Congress to reach agreement on a deficit-cutting plan. Lacking an agreement, sequestration would kick in automatically.
No agreement has been reached.

Herriman horse rescue looking for help to save animals | The Salt ...
(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) James Munden pets Scooby who was brought in to his wife's horse rescue in Herriman with a crushed eye that needed to be removed. James helps his wife Kendra rehabilitate starved, abused and neglected horses, who then go up for adoption. In four years Kendra has placed over 100 horses after the long and expensive road of nursing the horses back to health.
Labor of love ? More money could pay for employees, heated barn to help save abused equines.
They stayed up all night with Misha, trying to save her life.
Kendra Munden and four other people were there to help her took turns caring for the emaciated horse, wrapping her in blankets and sleeping bags to fend off the 2-degree winter night. After losing her job, Munden had dedicated her life to taking in horses and saving them, and she wasn?t going to lose Misha if she didn?t have to.
But she didn?t make it.
"I take it hard," Munden said, standing in the middle of snowy pens filled with other horses. "I know it?s not my fault, but I blame myself."
When the economy sank in 2009 and Munden lost her job selling construction supplies, her husband encouraged her to pursue a dream she?d had for a while: a horse rescue, where she could save and rehabilitate the animals the way other places save cats and dogs. Munden, a horse owner since she was 15, went with it. A few months later, she converted her 5-acre Herriman property, at 7300 W. 13496 South, into MadaresGold Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation Center.
Since they started, Munden?s found new homes for about 100 horses ? like Hero, who arrived beaten and bloody from head to toe two years ago ? and have lost 20, like Misha. Other rescues might call that a bad ratio, Munden said, "but we take the worst of the worst. I don?t want to put down other rescues, but I?m not going to turn away any horse."
The way she and her husband see it, if they can save them they?ll try, and if the horse doesn?t make it, at least they passed away with someone caring for them.
Every day, Munden tends to the horses. Sometimes her husband James can help, but he?s gone much of the time at his electrician job in Davis County, and once in a while there?s a volunteer or two to help feed the horses.
"But it mostly boils down to me," Munden said.
It?s not obvious from the narrow road, but right behind Munden?s one-story wooden house, 24 horses are spread out in pens and stalls. They come from all over northern Utah. Sometimes owners fall on hard times and don?t have the means to take care of the animal, so they give them up to the rescue. That was the case for Krissi Roberts, who didn?t know beforehand a horse she bought was blind, requiring more skill than Roberts has to ride. So she gave the horse up to Munden, who found it a new home. Roberts was so taken by the rescue, she?s stayed involved as a volunteer ever since.
story continues below
But most of the horses arrive starved, dehydrated or abused, given up by an owner or seized by a court. Some of them have only one eye from beatings they received from their previous owners.
And then they show up at MadaresGold. It seems they can tell right away they?ve arrived in a safe place, Munden said, where someone does have the love and means to care for them. Once they?re rehabilitated, Munden finds them a new home.
Most of them hear of the rescue through word of mouth or, like Kelli McFadden of West Jordan, through social media. A horse owner her whole life, she?d never seen the dark side of it until she heard of the rescue on Facebook.
Eighteen of the rescue?s current horses all came from one owner, a hoarder, who voluntarily gave up eight of them before the court forced her to give up the rest to the rescue two months ago. They were starved and beaten, and one needed surgery to remove a crushed eye. Because of ongoing legal proceedings, Munden declined to say where their previous home was, but they?ve never taken in so many horses from one place before.
"The most before was eight at one time from a previous owner," Munden?s husband James said.
McFadden?s heart broke for them. She and her husband, who already volunteer at the rescue and adopted one horse before, adopted one of the youngest from the hoarder ? Vegas, a paint horse. Vegas? mother had also been seized from the property, and died not long after from damage to her hooves. But McFadden has high hopes for her baby at its new home.
"She has come a long way. She was really scared when she got there. She was only two or three months old. You could tell she had never been handled," McFadden said. "To see one horse come in and scared to death and have no energy, and afraid of everything, to coming around and seeing their personalities, it?s like an adopted child [who was] abused and seeing them come around want to be around you?that?s the rewarding part."
But it?s a reward that comes at a cost for Munden.
She pays $2,000 a month on average just for hay, and then there is the dental work and veterinary bills. She feels lucky to have Lyle Barbour at South Mountain Equine as her veterinarian, who?s been with her from the start, finding her discounts and understanding that sometimes the payments take time.
The rescue survives on donations, auctions and fundraisers. But they?re not always enough to cover costs, and Munden makes up the difference herself. "It gets frustrating," she said, but she?s hopeful for the annual fundraiser this summer that recently obtained Ken Garff West Valley Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram as a sponsor.

94% Barbara
All Critics (52) | Top Critics (15) | Fresh (49) | Rotten (3)
Hoss is fantastic. Barbara is ice cold at the start, understandably so. Yet Hoss makes her sympathetic.
[Leaves] you drained and horrified.
Sometimes, the sun shines and the wind blows fresh and the very elements that make for intense hardship also open a window on intense joy.
Hoss is mesmerizing as a woman who holds it all together to the point of losing herself.
It's one terrific film, as smart, thoughtful and emotionally involving as just about anything that's out there.
It's a quiet film built of careful details.
Hoss' outstanding performance is a deep well of subtle yet unmistakable motives and reactions.
A crafty filmmaker, Petzold gives us information in increments. During the first half of his movie, which he co-wrote, we are all but left to our own devices; yet it is fascinating, and appropriate.
Worth seeing ... both for Petzold's singular aesthetic and for Hoss, who as usual is a riveting presence.
A well-observed, compelling, and evocative character piece, haunted by the ghosts of Germany's recent past.
Feels like total immersion into the sights, stresses, and the subtle solidarity among middle-class professionals living in the workers' paradise that Petzold's parents fled.
[R]esides somewhere in an unsatisfying borderland between drama and thriller, never quite catching fire as either...
A superbly crafted low-boil drama that gets its hooks into you the old-fashioned way, through character, and highlights the difficulties and cost of living by principles.
Subtly intriguing and ambiguous, it's filled with suspicion and subterfuge.
Despite the limited scope of its predictable narrative, "Barbara" remains a compelling character study thanks to Nina Hoss's enigmatic performance in the title role.
Christian Petzold's latest thriller threatens to cross over the line from minimalism to nihilism.
Both insightful and poignant, but not mawkish...an intriguing character study set against the backdrop of a dark time in history.
The plotting, the planning and the deepening relationships don't make for kinetic action, but they are the foundation for a smart, engrossing film.

Wawa Classic up next for UConn baseball
Once again, the UConn baseball team heads south while the winter continues.
The Huskies will travel to Orlando, Fla. to participate in the UCF Wawa Weekend Classic this weekend and are scheduled to face off against UCF, Troy and Texas Tech in the tournament.
Coach Jim Penders? team is coming off a 1-2 opening weekend, and an especially disappointing finale performance Sunday.
?We got beat [last Friday] night, we came back, I liked our fight on Friday night,? Penders said. ?On Saturday, I was really excited about our ability to pitch; we pitched really well and we didn?t drive in many runs, but we pitched it really well. And then on Sunday, it was like everything blew up. It was like we got worse in 13 hours. We struggled to do anything right, I did not like our energy at all.?
But Penders said that the Huskies have had a strong week of practice, and he is confident that they will bounce back well heading into their second weekend of play.
?We?re playing three really good teams and really good programs. They?re not just good teams; they have a history of success so we expect three really good battles. All three of them can really, really pitch. They?re aggressive teams, we know they?re going to put a lot of heat on us. They?re all from the South, they?ve been on fields a lot longer than us.?
Despite the fact that they will be competing against teams with the inherent advantage of living in warm-weather climates and being able to practice outdoors on a regular basis, Penders refuses to use that as an excuse to be ill-prepared early on in the season.
Having to practice indoors, in fact, can be used as an advantage, according to Penders. He feels the mentality it requires to be able to practice indoors and then perform in live-game situations can build up a toughness that is beneficial down the line during the season.
During the opening weekend, starting pitching was volatile for Penders, as ace Anthony Marzi gave up seven runs before he could record an out in the fourth inning. Carson Cross and Brian Ward, the other two starters, fared better and allowed a combined eight runs ? five earned ? over their 12 innings.
?Marzi just wasn?t himself,? Penders said. ?He was up in the zone, and he got hit around in that one big inning ? it seemed like they had seven runs in about three minutes, it was over that fast.?
The bullpen, on the other hand, was the Huskies biggest strength through the first three games. UConn relievers yielded just four runs ? three earned ? in 18 innings pitched over the first three games of the season.
The strength of his relievers was reassuring to Penders, who knows he can use them as a big advantage if that kind of pitching continues.
?If our bullpen pitches the way that it did this past weekend, we only need four or five innings out of our starters to put together a nice ballgame on the mound,? Penders said.
That strong pitching will need to continue for UConn against the Knights, Trojans and Red Raiders, all of whom are off to good starts so far this season.
UCF took two out of three against Siena before dropping a 5-3 game to No. 17 Florida last weekend. Troy has started their season off a perfect 4-0 after a sweep of Florida A&M, and Texas Tech is also 4-0 after wins against BYU, Northern Colorado and two against Northern Illinois.
The Huskies are slated to take on UCF at 7 p.m. on Friday, Troy at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Texas Tech at 11 a.m. on Sunday. All three games can be heard live on WHUS.

Apple, Facebook employees hacked via website malware, Java vulnerability
ZDNet's Zack Whittaker detailed the waterhole attack that was injected into a popular iPhone Dev SDK website (no link love due to the potential threat) which compromised the computers of visiting employees from Apple, Facebook?(and potentially Twitter, too) using a zero day?exploit in the Java web plug-in.
A note posted at the site reads (full text below):
iPhoneDevSDK has learned it was used as part of an attack whose victims included large internet companies. We have no reason to believe user data was compromised, but to be safe, we've reset all user passwords.
Apple on Tuesday revealed that some employees' computers had been hacked, but that no data were exposed. According to a statement:
"We identified a small number of systems within Apple that were infected and isolated them from our network. There is no evidence that any data left Apple"
The breaches are now believed to have occurred when employees visited the?iPhone Dev SDK website, which was infected with zero day malware that exploited a vulnerability in the Java browser plug-in, installing malware on their Mac computers.
Apple yesterday released Java for OS X 2013-001?which?uninstalls the Apple-provided Java applet plug-in from all web browsers. Users must then download the latest version of the Java applet plug-in from Oracle in order to use Java applets.?
Bloomberg reports that?the hacks were the work of an Eastern European gang of hackers attempting to steal company secrets, citing "two people familiar with the matter."
I want to echo Zack's warning to?not visit this site in as it may still contain active malware that could lead to infection.
Most importantly: Security holes in Java have been responsible for a number of high-profile attacks recently. All Mac users should install?Java for OS X 2013-001?immediately and only install the Oracle Java plug-in if you absolutely need it.?Also, heed the rest of Zack's warnings and precautions here, which include:
- Remove Java immediately
- Check your logs, history, browsing records
- Run a full, network-wide malware sweep
- Take future precautions: Virtualize and isolate risky software
If you run a WordPress blog, patch it up to the latest release, harden it, and never install themes from unknown/insecure sources. If your Wordpress blog has been infected this post will help you clean it.
Update: Eric Romang has posted a forensic timeline of the attacks.
Here's the full text of the warning at the?iPhoneDevSDK:
Today, we were alerted that our site was part of an elaborate and sophisticated attack whose victims included large internet companies. We were alerted through the press, via an AllThingsD article, which cited Facebook. Prior to this article, we had no knowledge of this breach and hadn't been contacted by Facebook, any other company, or any law enforcement about the potential breach. You can read more about the attack via?Facebook's blog post.
As the most widely read dedicated iOS developer forum, we're targeted for attacks frequently. Security is a top priority for us, which is one reason why we switched to Vanilla Forums to host our site last year. Vanilla manages security like pros, and I should be clear that -- as best we can tell right now -- this attack has nothing to do with their software.
Immediately, we were in contact with Facebook's security team, including Joe Sullivan, Facebook's Chief Security Officer, and his team, to learn what they knew. We also contacted Vanilla, our amazing forum hosts, to ensure the problem was not with their software.
What we've learned is that it appears a single administrator account was compromised. The hackers used this account to modify our theme and inject JavaScript into our site. That JavaScript appears to have used a sophisticated, previously unknown exploit to hack into certain user's computers.
We're still trying to determine the exploit's exact timeline and details, but it appears as though it was ended (by the hacker) on January 30, 2013.
As with Facebook, it's important to stress that we have no reason to believe user data was compromised.
Just to be sure, we've reset all users' passwords. Please use our?Forgot Password?feature the next time you log in to reset your password.
We're continuing to work with Facebook, Vanilla, other targeted companies, and law enforcement to find out who is behind this sophisticated attack.
We're very sorry for the inconvenience -- we'll work tirelessly to ensure your data's security now and in the future. I want to thank Vanilla Forums for their help in the matter and for keeping the site secure, as well as Facebook for their help quickly after we reached out.
