New Jordanian Ambassador to Israel

Jordan is set to appoint a new ambassador to Israel for the first time in years.

According to a report published Saturday in the London-based al-Hayat newspaper, the Hashemite Kingdom will finally fill the post that has remained vacant for more than two years.

The new ambassador, Walid Obeidat, has long served as a consultant to Jordan's foreign ministry and is a professional diplomat.

The new appointment comes amid new threats to the monarchy faced by King Abdullah II by the country's sole legitimate opposition party, the Muslim Brotherhood, which according to intelligence sources quoted by DEBKAfile?has called on the king to transform his government to a constitutional monarchy, rendering him essentially powerless.

With more than 120,000 Syrian refugees encamped in the northern part of the country and more pouring across the border by the thousands every day, plus a majority population of more than 70 percent Palestinian Authority Arabs, the king can ill afford to alienate the strong Western-backed ally - Israel - that he has on his western border.

This situation mirrors somewhat the threat faced by Abdullah's father in September 1970. At that time, tens of thousands of Arab refugees who had settled in Jordan after fleeing Israel following the 1948 and 1967 wars, came under the banner of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which then tried to overthrow the Amman government. In response, King Hussein slaughtered those who had threatened his regime ? a time hence dubbed ?Black September -- and expelled the PLO and thousands of other Arabs from the country, deporting them to Lebanon.? It was Israel's troops who quietly provided military protection from outside foreign intervention to the king's soldiers as they carried out their grisly task, according to historical documents.

During his speech at the United Nations General Assembly this week, King Abdullah II blamed Israel's presence in Judea and Samaria, and Jewish construction in those areas, for the setbacks in Jordan's attempts to mediate between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.?But the truth is far more complex. PA leaders had little interest in reaching a final status agreement at a time when they were preparing instead for a unilateral statehood bid at the United Nations ? one which ultimately failed.

Jordan's former Ambassador Ali Al-Ayed, meanwhile, was recalled back to Amman in 2009 as a protest against Israel's mini-war against Gaza's terrorist rulers, the Hamas terror organization.

Since that time, ties between the two countries have been delicate.

While making Saturday's announcement, King Abdullah II also took the opportunity to criticize the Jewish State for the second time in less than a month. Al-Hayat reported that the Jordanian King sees Netanyahu's conduct as a "right-wing refusal of the peace-process." He blamed Israel's prime minister for the deadlock with the Palestinian Authority over a final status agreement, and?noted that Obeidat had been appointed to his role as an envoy to Israel a year ago. However, he was held in Amman to protest Israel's policies toward the PA.

Just a few weeks ago, Abdullah claimed that Israel has been sabotaging his country's efforts at developing a nuclear energy program ? an accusation Jerusalem firmly denied.

It is still not yet clear when Jordan's envoy will arrive to begin his duties at his embassy in Israel.

Will Higher Heat Content In Trash Help Waste-to-Energy Stocks?

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) recently published an article describing an increase in the energy content of municipal solid waste (MSW). The reason for this increase is an increase in the percentage of waste from "non-biogenic" sources (i.e. plastics) as compared to biogenic sources (paper, cardboard, wood, food and yard waste, etc.) Biogenic waste has an average heat content of 11 MMBtu/ton, as compared to 23 MMBtu/ton for non-biogenic waste.

The EIA attributes the relative decrease in the amount of (biogenic) food containers and packaging (heat content 16.6 MMBtu/ton) and an increase in waste polypropylene (PP, 38 MMBtu/ton). PP is the relatively hard-to-recycle plastic #5, found in yogurt cups and other wide-necked containers, and has a much higher heat content that relatively easy-to-recycle plastics #1 and #2 (PETE at 20.5 MMBTu/ton and HDPE at 19.5 MMBtu).

The higher heat content of MSW should make generating electricity from MSW more efficient, and give a slight boost to margins of waste-to-energy companies like MSW electricity generators like Covanta (NYSE:CVA) and Algonquin Power and Utilities (AQUNF.PK), which generates thermal energy from MSW in addition to a large renewable energy business.

However, if increasing energy content of waste is to make a difference in the stock prices of MSW-to-energy firms, it will have to be sustained over the long term. I doubt the trend will continue for long. First of all, total MSW volumes are flat in the US, and falling on a per-capita basis, even while recycling rates are rising (EIA data).

I expect increased recycling to begin to reduce the energy content of the remaining waste as less-recycled, higher energy-content materials are increasingly recycled. Currently, only 13.5% of plastic containers in the waste stream are recovered, as opposed to 71% of paper and 33% of glass. Further, high-energy PP is becoming increasingly easy to recycle; I was recently pleased to find that it and LDPE (plastic #4, also with a relatively heat content of 24.1 MMBtu) are now accepted at my local transfer station.

While waste-to-energy companies may be getting a small margin boost from higher MSW heat content today, investors should not count on any such boost being permanent. That's a large part of the reason why my preferred investments in MSW are integrated companies like Waste Management (NYSE:WM), which can profit from both increased recycling and waste-to-energy opportunities.

Home prenatal scans help keep babies safe

KEEPING a close watch on baby and mother during pregnancy is crucial, but the equipment to do this is often found only in hospitals. So mothers who live far from medical centres must make long journeys to receive routine scans.

This could soon change thanks to a portable fetal-monitoring package based around a smartphone. It could provide broader access to cheap monitoring systems for those in remote locations and in countries without access to the most advanced prenatal technologies.

Designed by a team of engineers, computer scientists and obstetricians at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the system uses commercially available sensors to monitor the fetal heartbeat during pregnancy or the mother's contractions during labour. That information is sent via Bluetooth to an Android smartphone, which processes it before relaying it to the main hospital database using whatever connections are available.

Dimitrios Mastrogiannis, the lead physician on the project, says that other health measures such as maternal oxygen saturation or blood-glucose monitors could be integrated into the system.

The work is being presented at the BodyNets conference in Oslo, Norway, this week.

There are other problems like the host may place advertise on your website without your consent.

Tier-four data centers have more security, as well as more uptime, than lower-tiered data centers. One should choose the plan offering best service at reasonable price. (AP) ? Freedom was at the heart of Belgian designer Raf Simons' debut ready-to-wear outing for Christian Dior ? a confident show that twinned the essence of the 1950's "New Look," with the liberated hemlines of the 1960s.

Simons, a minimalist, is in many ways the stark opposite of Christian Dior, the exuberant house founder who favored longer ankle-length silhouettes.

But Friday's free, liberating display shows that in spirit ? if not perhaps in silhouette ? they meet eye to eye.

Simons took the "New Look" bar jacket, in black, gray and white and sent it down the catwalk often bare-legged, with the hemlines of the sexual revolution.

It was the same rebellious mood with which Christian Dior founded the house in 1947: His long-length "New Look" shocked the fashion world in its indulgent use of material ? a backlash against wartime fabric rationing.

"The foundation of the house is a reaction to restrictions," said Simons. "I wanted to do that too."

Do it, he did ? not forgetting to have fun on the way.

The strongest of the 53 looks were the highly wearable plays on the "bar."

Cheekily, Simons turned it and other jackets into mini dresses ? twinned with black uber-short shorts.

Straight H-lines and ball gowns were truncated, as were flared A-lines, often curved with deceptively complex mixes of pleats and godets a dash of Simons' own signature architecture.

Simons' has been swatting up.

Where Christian Dior loved garden flowers ? here, Raf Simons delved even further into the bushes, bringing back in his jam-jar six sumptuous insect-inspired looks in silk and tulle.

One pink and blue loose A-line used tulle and embroidery to create the translucent veins of an insect wing.

Another beautiful, subtle touch was an orange embroidered organza dress with the delicate patterning of a butterfly wing.

It was details like this that made this collection fly so freely and so high.

What to do in current stock market conditions? And/or When do I cut ...

I have only recently started investing in the stock market thinking it was a pretty good time to since the stocks I liked were down. I went and bought them thinking that the market would come around and not panic and go back on course to fundamentals. With most of my picks getting hammered, like the FMD i bought at $39 and $35 now only $26, or TZOO I bought at $21 now only $15, should I sell and cut my losses? But I know that these are real good companies with strong businesses making me want to buy more of these stocks actually, unless they keep falling..

I?m a college student/entrepreneur from the Philippines looking to grow my moneyand thought of trying the stock market because I?ve read in so many books and articles that if I start now, I could take advantage of the power of compounding, so I did.:) Also being a lone investor here in Philippines, I don?t have anyone to consult with or ask advice from. And I?m not convinced enough yet to invest in local public companies. Thank you!

Weak orders point to sharp slowdown in U.S. manufacturing

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Orders for long-lasting U.S. manufactured goods fell sharply in August, suggesting the main engine of economic growth was stalling and offsetting the hopeful sign provided by a drop in new claims for jobless benefits.

The Commerce Department said on Thursday durable goods orders dived 13.2 percent, the largest drop since January 2009, when the economy was in the throes of a recession. The decline primarily reflected weak demand for aircraft and automobiles, although orders were down for a wide range of goods.

Excluding transportation, orders were off 1.6 percent.

"It just shows the manufacturing side of the economy continues to labor here, and in fact, contract," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer at Solaris Group in Bedford Hills, New York.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected orders for durable goods -- items from toasters to aircraft that are meant to last at least three years -- to fall 5 percent, with non-transportation orders rising marginally.

Underscoring the economy's weakness, the government revised its measure of second-quarter growth to just a 1.3 percent annual pace from 1.7 percent, largely to reflect the impact a drought in the Midwest had on farm inventories.

Housing has been one of the economy's relative bright spots, but a report showing that contracts to buy previously owned U.S. homes fell in August provided a counterpoint to other recent data on housing that has shown activity picking up.

However, not all the news on Thursday was downbeat.

A separate report from the Labor Department showed the number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits fell 26,000 last week to a two-month low of 359,000. The four-week moving average for new claims, a better measure of labor market trends fell for the first time after five weeks of increases.

The labor market has been mired in weakness with worries about higher taxes and deep government spending cuts in January, ongoing debt problems in Europe and slowing global growth leading employers to be cautious about ramping up hiring.

Sluggish job gains and stubbornly high unemployment spurred the Federal Reserve this month into launching a third round of bond purchases to drive down already low interest rates.

The U.S. central bank vowed to buy $40 billion worth of mortgage-backed securities each month until it sees a sustained upturn in the labor market.

Mortgage finance company Freddie Mac said those purchases helped push the average rate on a 30-year fixed rate mortgage down to a record low of 3.40 percent this week.

In a preliminary estimate of an upcoming annual revision to its main employment measures, the Labor Department said it likely undercounted job growth in the 12 months through March by 386,000.

But the good news on the labor market was eclipsed by the weak durable goods report.

Orders for non-defense capital goods excluding aircraft, a proxy for business spending plans, rose 1.1 percent in August, only partly reversing a 5.2 percent slide the prior month.

What's more, shipments of these goods, which are used to calculate equipment and software spending in the GDP report, fell for a second straight month. The weakness suggested third-quarter economic growth would probably not improve much from April-June's anemic pace.

Manufacturing, which has been the main driver of the recovery from the 2007-09 recession, has been hit by turbulence from sluggish domestic and global demand.

Fears that the U.S. Congress could fail to avert a "fiscal cliff" -- the $500 billion or so in expiring tax cuts and government spending reductions set to take hold in 2013 -- have also left businesses with little incentive to boost production.

Fitch Ratings said on Thursday that the sharp tightening of U.S. fiscal policy could tip the world into recession.

Google's Self-Driving Cars Now Legal in California | Geekosystem

Google?s been testing self-driving cars for some time now. It is known. Most of this has been private tests, conducted on approved courses. Following in the footsteps of Nevada, however, California has now approved Google?s?autonomous?cars for their roadways ? in a trial capacity, anyway. Google will still be required to have a human handler present to take over if needed, but all the heavy lifting will be accomplished by the car itself. Obviously, Skynet has already won.

Bloomberg explains:

Self-driving cars will soon motor around the most populous U.S. state, at least on a test basis, after a law written with the help of Google Inc. was signed by California Governor Jerry Brown.

The law signed yesterday allows trials of autonomous vehicles on the state?s roadways as long as there?s a licensed human in the driver?s seat to take over if needed.

?Today we are looking at science fiction become tomorrow?s reality,? Brown said at a signing ceremony at Google?s headquarters in Mountain View, California.

The handler is really just a formality, however, as Google?s self-driving cars have an impeccable safety record. Those few incidents that they?ve been involved in were all eventually attributed to user error. Garbage in, garbage out, after all.

S. Africa's Malema accused of money laundering

South African populist firebrand Julius Malema, a former leader of the African National Congress' Youth League, smiles as he arrives in court on Wednesday.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

POLOKWANE, South Africa --?Firebrand South African politician Julius Malema appeared in a regional court Wednesday on a charge of money laundering in connection with a $6.5 million government contract awarded to a company his family trust partly owns.

Malema appeared in a police station in Polokwane, in South Africa's northeast, before entering the regional court. People started cheering when he entered the courtroom.

Large crowds of supporters also gathered around the police station and court, chanting his name. Vigils were held through the night for him, where supporters sang songs against South Africa's president. Malema was granted bail of $1,250 by the court and his next court date is Nov. 30.

Malema says charges are politically motivated at a time when he's become outspoken about the labor unrest in South Africa's mining industry and says they are meant to shut him up after he threatened to make the mines ungovernable.

Malema was expelled from the ruling African National Congress party earlier this year for sowing disunity.

Julius Malema, the South African politician blamed for inflaming the miners' strikes, there told NBC News that the treatment of the poor is worse now than it was under apartheid. NBC's Rohit Kachroo reports.

In an interview with NBC News? Rohit Kachroo earlier this month, Malema said the mineworkers were ?prepared to die? over the dispute.

?They will never kill all the mineworkers. It is not practically possible unless they are prepared to face charges of genocide,? Malema added. ?For every revolution there are casualties. ... We lost many great people during the apartheid struggle.?

Supporters of Julius Malema, who claim the case against him is politically motivated, demonstrate near the courthouse on Wednesday.

He claims conditions for many black people are worse under democracy than they were under apartheid. ?The gap between the rich and the poor has widened,? Malema told NBC News.

Voice of hate or hero? South Africa's downtrodden workers put faith in Malema

In a separate case, the South African Revenue Service is also charging Malema with unpaid taxes and interest of $2 million.

View images of civil rights leader Nelson Mandela, who went from anti-apartheid activist to prisoner to South Africa's first black president.

Malema's four business associates appeared in court Tuesday on charges including fraud, corruption and money laundering for the $6.5 million awarded to company On Point Engineering for road services in Limpopo province. They were granted a bail of $5,000 each.

'Murder on a massive scale': Angry fallout from S. Africa mine shootings

A draft of the charge sheet says benefited from the tender and used it to fund a farm that cost nearly $500,000 and to make a payment for a luxury car.

Last week, police surrounded Malema and threatened his arrest when he arrived at a stadium to address striking mine workers who were meeting to vote on a wage deal. Malema was forced to leave before addressing the crowd of thousands.

Nearly six weeks of strikes by workers at the platinum mine saw violence that killed 46 people.

E. J. Levy Kicks Off 2012-2013 VOICES Series | The Point News ...

On Thursday, Sept. 13, in Daugherty-Palmer Commons (DPC), author E. J. Levy began the 2012-2013 VOICES Series by reading her short story, ?Theory of Dramatic Action? at 8:15 p.m.

The seats in DPC were completely full?some chairs had to be added to the audience?and students were there for a number of reasons, ranging from fulfilling a requirement, to attending because a friend encouraged them to go, to being interested in the author and her works.

Sophomore Lindsey Leitera, on why she went to the reading, said, ?I?m in a creative writing class, so I came to get another perspective, and it?s also a requirement.?
On another end of the spectrum, senior Marty McGowan said, ?I am very uninformed about the author. To be honest, my roommate asked me about five minutes ago if I wanted to come to this.?

As the evening began, Levy was introduced by Professor Jennifer Cognard-Black, of the English Department. Professor Cognard-Black described Levy as being ?like a blue moon, both special and rare,? and like a ?minor deity,? because by the time she had reached graduate school, she had already been published.

?Theory of Dramatic Action,? a piece that follows a young woman who is in the process of coming to terms with her sexuality and her career path, is one of the many short stories in Levy?s newest compilation of works, Love, In Theory; it draws upon a variety of scholarly theories to bring the ideas of thought and love together. Levy attempted to convey the importance of the linking of heart and mind, a link which she claims has been forgotten.

The message of Love, In Theory is a response to the view that art is seen as categorical. Levy said, ?Art is not categorical. Everything is up for grabs.? Speaking to this theme, the book that she is currently working on delves into the Enlightenment period in addition to Romantic theories.

At the conclusion of the reading, Levy opened the floor to questions, one of which addressed her writing process. She said she always takes notes in a notebook (even while driving). She added, ?When an idea comes to you, it could be nice to have something at hand.?

When asked why she chose to read the piece that she did, Levy responded, ?Almost to dare myself. I like to shock people. I read this last week and someone walked out.?
When the evening drew to a close, students were pleasantly surprised and had positive reactions to the reading. McGowan, who had originally tagged along with his roommate, ended up ?really enjoying it.?

Junior Kevin Koeser commented, ?I thought it was really well done. She engaged me a lot. It got me really interested in reading the rest of the stories she wrote. Her tone was really even, and it caused her dry humor to stand out more and it emphasized the more dramatic moments.? In addition to his appreciation for Levy?s contribution to the series, Koeser bought Love, In Theory and personally had it signed.Love, In Theory, which is now available to the public, was sold for $20 in the back corner of the main room in DPC. Levy enjoyed speaking with St. Mary?s students and other attendees, and even offered to sign copies of her book that were purchased.

New tool for CSI? Geographic software maps distinctive features inside bones

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A common type of geographic mapping software offers a new way to study human remains.

In a recent issue of the American Journal of Physical Anthropology, researchers describe how they used commercially available mapping software to identify features inside a human foot bone -- a new way to study human skeletal variation.

David Rose, a Captain in the Ohio State University Police Division and doctoral student in anthropology, began the project to determine whether the patterns of change inside the bones of human remains could reveal how the bones were used during life.

"Our bones adapt to the load that's placed on them. Patterns of tension and compression show up in our internal bone structure, and this software lets us look at those patterns in a new way," Rose said.

Julie Field, study co-author and assistant professor of anthropology at Ohio State, explained that archaeologists frequently use geographic information system (GIS) software to map the location of objects uncovered at an excavation site.

"We try to identify important clusters of objects such as household tools or agricultural tools that would indicate patterns of human activity," Field explained. "Based on certain scientific criteria that you give it, the software gives you a statistical measure of whether the objects you're looking at actually constitute a cluster."

In this case, the researchers used a program called ArcGIS. But similar types of mapping software can analyze any kind of spatial data, such as crime statistics or flood models, Rose added. He usesthe same program to map line-of-site views to develop security plans for events on campus.

This is the first time anyone has used GIS software to map bone microstructure.

Co-author Sam Stout, professor of anthropology at Ohio State and Rose's advisor, explained why the study of internal bone structure is important.

"Dave's work allows us to visualize, analyze, and compare the distribution of microscopic features that reflect the development and maintenance of bones, which we can relate to skeletal health and disease -- for example, bone fragility in osteoporosis," Stout said.

Advances that relate to the study of foot bones in particular would be useful in forensics, Rose explained, because of one grisly fact: when unidentified human remains are discovered today, the foot bones are sometimes intact, having been protected by the deceased person's shoes. Any information about the person, such as age, sex, or body size could ultimately aid law enforcement in identifying a body.

For this study, the researchers studied the cross-section of a metatarsal -- a long bone in the foot -- from a deceased woman who generously gave her body to the Division of Anatomy's Body Donation Program. Using this bone cross-section, they demonstrated how the software could be used to show the loads experienced in the foot during gait.

Rose recorded an extremely high-resolution image of the bone cross-section under a microscope, and used the software to map the location of key structures called osteons.

Osteons are microscopic structures created throughout life to fix small cracks or to maintain mineral levels in our blood. The size and shape of osteons, along with the direction of the collagen fibers from which they are made inside bone, are influenced by the loads we place on our bones during life.

In this case, the donor's metatarsal bone showed the predicted pattern of normal bone remodeling, with concentrations of particular types of osteons along the top and bottom of the bone which could have been formed by forces experienced as she walked -- just where researchers would expect to see telltale signs of foot flexure and compression.

This study provides a proof of concept, Rose cautioned, and many more bones would have to be studied before GIS software could provide meaningful insight into bone biology.

"Really, we're just combining very basic principles in GIS and skeletal biology," he said. "But I believe that there is a tremendous opportunity for advancements at the intersection of both disciplines. The real advantage to this method is that it offers a new scale for the study of human variation offering to shed light on how we adapt to our surroundings."

Co-author Amanda Agnew, assistant professor of anatomy, agreed and added that the work "combines bone biology, biomechanics, and biomedical informatics to explore new methods to evaluate old questions."

Timothy Gocha of the Department of Anthropology also contributed to this research.

The European Parliament votes for minimum tax rates on royalties and

flickr / Images_of_Money

On September 11th?the European Parliament?voted in favour of introducing a minimum tax rate on interests and royalty income. This is a crucial step in the fight against tax dodging by multinational companies. Royalties and interest payments made between subsidiaries of the same company are two of the main instruments used by multinational companies to evade taxes, at the moment this is far too easy. The process works like this:

  1. A multinational company creates a shell company in a tax haven, where taxation is low or non-existent.
  2. The company transfers the ownership of a license or copyright or trademark to the shell company.
  3. The shell or empty company charges royalties to other companies owned by the group for using the license, trademark or copyright.
  4. Since it is very difficult to assess the value of a trademark, license or other intangible assets, the shell company can charge as much as it wants, thereby reducing profits (an lowering taxation) in the countries where the group operates and shifting them to a tax haven where they are untaxed.

Interest can be sued in a similar way when the company in the tax haven is created as a financing arm. It can extend loans to companies in the group and use interest rates, which are usually deductible in most countries, to shift income to the tax haven where they will be subject to low or no taxation. This is known as thin capitalisation

Both are common practices used by multinational companies. Some examples include a?US pharmaceutical company, the?brewer SAB Miller?and?Exxon.

Following the vote, the Green economic and finance spokesperson, Sven Giegold (MEP, Germany), stated that ?It is scandalous that EU governments are still failing to take action against businesses dodging their tax obligations in the member states in which they operate at a time when EU exchequers are under such pressure. The EP has today voted in favour of strengthening the draft legislation, with a view to prohibiting the current practice of companies channelling profits through different member states and tax regimes to avoid their tax responsibility. These ?legitimate? tax avoidance schemes like the ?Double Irish? and the ?Dutch sandwich? should be totally outlawed and member state governments should take on board today?s vote.?

This week there was also a vote on a revised?Accounting Directive?which requires large extractive, logging, banking, telecommunication and construction companies to report their payments to governments on country-by-country basis. In the last two weeks, the European Parliament has taken two crucial steps towards a fairer and more democratic economic system. The European Council should now hear the voices of people and make sure progress is not weakened during the negotiations.

Einstein's brain is now interactive iPad app

CHICAGO (AP) ? The brain that revolutionized physics now can be downloaded as an app for $9.99. But it won't help you win at Angry Birds.

While Albert Einstein's genius isn't included, an exclusive iPad application launched Tuesday promises to make detailed images of his brain more accessible to scientists than ever before. Teachers, students and anyone who's curious also can get a look.

A medical museum under development in Chicago obtained funding to scan and digitize nearly 350 fragile and priceless slides made from slices of Einstein's brain after his death in 1955. The application will allow researchers and novices to peer into the eccentric Nobel winner's brain as if they were looking through a microscope.

"I can't wait to find out what they'll discover," said Steve Landers, a consultant for the National Museum of Health and Medicine Chicago who designed the app. "I'd like to think Einstein would have been excited."

After Einstein died, a pathologist named Thomas Harvey performed an autopsy, removing the great man's brain in hopes that future researchers could discover the secrets behind his genius.

Harvey gave samples to researchers and collaborated on a 1999 study published in the Lancet. That study showed a region of Einstein's brain ? the parietal lobe ? was 15 percent wider than normal. The parietal lobe is important to the understanding of math, language and spatial relationships.

The new iPad app may allow researchers to dig even deeper by looking for brain regions where the neurons are more densely connected than normal, said Dr. Phillip Epstein, a Chicago-area neuroscientist and consultant for the museum.

But because the tissue was preserved before modern imaging technology, it may be difficult for scientists to figure out exactly where in Einstein's brain each slide originated. Although the new app organizes the slides into general brain regions, it doesn't map them with precision to an anatomical model.

"They didn't have MRI. We don't have a three-dimensional model of the brain of Einstein, so we don't know where the samples were taken from," said researcher Jacopo Annese of the Brain Observatory at the University of California, San Diego. What's more, the 1-inch-by-3-inch Einstein slides on the app represent only a fraction of the entire brain, Annese said.

Annese has preserved and digitized another famous brain, that of Henry Molaison, who died in 2008 after living for decades with profound amnesia. Known as "H.M." in scientific studies, Molaison participated during his life in research that revealed new insights on learning and memory.

A searchable website with images of more than 2,400 slides of Molaison's entire brain will be available to the public in December, Annese said.

"There will be another Einstein and we'll do it like H.M.," Annese predicted. For now, he said, it's exciting that the Einstein brain tissue has been preserved digitally before the slides deteriorate or become damaged. The app will spark interest in the field of brain research, just because it's Einstein, he said.

"It's a beautiful collection to have opened up to the public," Annese said.

Some may question whether Einstein would have wanted images of his remains sold to non-scientists for $9.99.

"There's been a lot of debate over what Einstein's intentions were," museum board member Jim Paglia said. "We know he didn't want a circus made of his remains. But he understood the value to research and science to study his brain, and we think we've addressed that in a respectful manner."

Paglia said the app could "inspire a whole new generation of neuroscientists."

Proceeds from sales will go to the U.S. Department of Defense's National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, Md., and to the Chicago satellite museum, which is set to open in 2015 with interactive exhibits and the museum's digital collections.

Arnold Schwarzenegger reveals how Shriver confronted him over secret son

In his new tell-all memoir, Arnold Schwarzenegger lays out exactly how he was blindsided by ex-wife Maria Shriver when she waited until he left office to set up a couples' counseling session to confront him about the child he secretly had with the couple's housekeeper.

In the book called "Total Recall," due out next week, Schwarzenegger says that it was on Jan. 4, 2011, when he and Shriver entered a therapist's office for a meeting initiated by her the day after his term as governor of California came to an end.

"The minute we sat down, the therapist turned to me and said, 'Maria wanted to come here today and to ask about a child -- whether you fathered a child with your housekeeper Mildred,'" the actor and former pol wrote in the book. "I told the therapist, 'It's true.'"

Schwarzenegger says he then started groveling, telling his wife that he had "screwed up" and that she was the "perfect wife," and that he was still "turned on" by her. It didn't work, and Shriver separated from him, and later filed for divorce.

In the book, Schwarzenegger says he had sex with housekeeper Mildred Baena in 1996 in the family guest house while Shriver and their kids were away on vacation and he was in town filming "Batman and Robin."

Schwarzenegger, 65, says that for years he tried to convince himself that Baena's husband was the father of their son, Joseph. But when the boy grew up and the resemblance to Schwarzenegger was so strong, he writes, "I realized there was little doubt that he was my son."

This hiding of the tryst and his secret speculation about his biological son all happened while Schwarzenegger watched as Shriver defended him from allegations of infidelity.

"I am my own woman," Shiver said in a 2003 appearance on "Oprah." "I have not been, quote, "bred," to look the other way."

Schwarzenegger says he kept the affair and the fact that he was Joseph's father a secret partly because he was embarrassed, and also because he didn't want to face up to his wife's family, the Kennedys.

"Instead of doing the right thing, I'd just put the truth in a mental compartment and locked it up where I didn't deal with it every day," he writes.

In the book, Schwarzenegger also notes a parting shot he says Shriver, 56, took after their marriage ended. During the funeral for her father, Sargent Shriver, his now ex-wife described the respect he had for her mom.

"The way he admired her and respected her, when I think about it today, it actually takes my breath away," she said.

Schwarzenegger, who was in the audience, says that comment might have been "partly directed at me."

Schwarzenegger says he still doesn't know why he cheated, but that it was probably a mixture of stupidity and arrogance, he writes.

The star also writes that he still hopes to reunite with Shriver.

"You can call this denial," he writes. "But it's the way my mind works."

Man updates Facebook page while holding hostage

PITTSBURGH -- An armed man was holding a hostage inside a Pittsburgh high-rise building on Friday, authorities said, and he appeared to be posting messages about his situation on Facebook.

Police were negotiating with the man who said he had a gun and also a bomb in a 16th-floor office at 3 Gateway Center, Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper told reporters at the scene.

"He is not telling negotiators why he's doing this," Harper said. There have been no injuries, he added.

Police identified the man as Klein Michael Thaxton and said they were talking to him by telephone and monitoring his Facebook page.

On Facebook, a man who appeared to be Thaxton was posting messages at mid-morning. He also posted what he claimed was his telephone number.

"how this ends is up to yall," said one of his Facebook messages.

In another message, he wrote: "i cant take it no more."

"this life im livn rite now i dnt want anymore ive lost everything and i aint getting it back," said another message.

Several people responded to him on Facebook saying they were praying for him and encouraging him to cooperate with police.

But others were urging him to continue his standoff with police, Harper said. Police were monitoring those Facebook messages and those people could face criminal charges as accessories, he said.

Police said they were considering asking Facebook to

take down Thaxton's page and as of early afternoon, it was no longer available.

Thaxton walked into the office shortly after 8 a.m. and took one man hostage, police said, but had not made any demands.

Harper said Thaxton was being cooperative and calm and that police were willing to be patient in resolving the standoff.

"We might be here for a while," Harper said.

Thaxton's mother was escorted inside the building to talk to her son, but she told police did not know his motive, Harper said.

As she left the building, she was visibly distraught.

"I just want him to get the help he needs," she said, refusing to give her name.

The incident was taking place in the office of a company that handles union pensions, but police said Thaxton did not appear to have any connection to the company.

On Facebook, the man believed to be Thaxton also wrote: "welln pops youll never have to worry about me again you'll nevr need to by me anything no need to ever waste ur hard earned money on me. i'll live n jail you dnt want me around anymore thats kool bye..."

Police said the suspect was believed to be ex-military, and Thaxton's mother confirmed that her son had served in the U.S. Army.

The situation was contained and rest of the office building was not evacuated, Harper said. Police cordoned off several streets around the office building.

OVitaminpro herbal supplements | Health information and resources ...

OVitaminpro has several different items that I have purchased. The products are natural herbal supplements, and they are safe to use. I was not sure about ordering vitamins online, but after I talked to one of the assistants for free, I decided to try the depression medication that the company offers. I was blown away by how well it worked. Not only did it relieve some of the anxiety I had been feeling, but it also helped me get much needed sleep.

There are too many conditions to list that can be treated by using the vitamins from this company. I have used the blood sugar controlling medications and the fatigue support in the past two months. There are different sizes that you can order. There are also different types of blood sugar support medications that you can order. You need to look through everything and ask the company what they would recommend.
One of the things that I like about this company is that it doesn?t have medications only for people. There are several items that you can purchase for pets. I have an older dog that has trouble with his hips, and I found a medication for joint relief for dogs. I tried a small bottle, and it has seemed to help my pet.
