WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Supreme Court has declined to revive a lawsuit against Iran filed by Americans held hostage at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran more than 30 years ago.
The justices on Tuesday did not comment in letting stand lower court decisions dismissing the $6.6 billion class-action lawsuit.
Tho lower courts found the agreement to release the hostages, known as the Algiers Accords, precluded lawsuits against Iran. The suit argued that legislation in 2008 gave the hostages the right to sue.
Fifty-two American diplomats and military officials were held captive for more than a year at the end of Jimmy Carter's presidency by a group of Islamist students who supported the Iranian revolution.
The hostages were released on Jan. 20, 1981, just minutes after Ronald Reagan was sworn in to succeed Carter.

Study finds TV can decrease self-esteem in children, except white boysPublic release date: 30-May-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- If you are a white girl, a black girl or a black boy, exposure to today's electronic media in the long run tends to make you feel worse about yourself. If you're a white boy, you'll feel better, according to a new study led by an Indiana University professor.
Nicole Martins, an assistant professor of telecommunications in the IU College of Arts and Sciences, and Kristen Harrison, professor of communication studies at the University of Michigan, also found that black children in their study spent, on average, an extra 10 hours a week watching television.
"We can't deny the fact that media has an influence when they're spending most of their time -- when they're not in school -- with the television," Martins said.
Harrison added, "Children who are not doing other things besides watching television cannot help but compare themselves to what they see on the screen."
Their paper has been published in Communication Research. Martins and Harrison surveyed a group of about 400 black and white preadolescent students in communities in the Midwest over a yearlong period. Rather than look at the impact of particular shows or genres, they focused on the correlation between the time in front of the TV and the impact on their self-esteem.
"Regardless of what show you're watching, if you're a white male, things in life are pretty good for you," Martins said of characters on TV. "You tend to be in positions of power, you have prestigious occupations, high education, glamorous houses, a beautiful wife, with very little portrayals of how hard you worked to get there.
"If you are a girl or a woman, what you see is that women on television are not given a variety of roles," she added. "The roles that they see are pretty simplistic; they're almost always one-dimensional and focused on the success they have because of how they look, not what they do or what they think or how they got there.
"This sexualization of women presumably leads to this negative impact on girls."
With regard to black boys, they are often criminalized in many programs, shown as hoodlums and buffoons, and without much variety in the kinds of roles they occupy.
"Young black boys are getting the opposite message: that there is not lots of good things that you can aspire to," Martins said. "If we think about those kinds of messages, that's what's responsible for the impact.
"If we think just about the sheer amount of time they're spending, and not the messages, these kids are spending so much time with the media that they're not given a chance to explore other things they're good at, that could boost their self-esteem."
Martins said their study counters claims by producers that programs have been progressive in their depictions of under-represented populations. An earlier study co-authored by her and Harrison suggests that video games "are the worst offenders when it comes to representation of ethnicity and gender."
Other research is starting to show the impacts of other kinds of entertainment sources, such as video games and hand-held devices. It indicates that young people are becoming creative at "media multitasking."
"Even though these new technologies are becoming more available, kids still spend more time with TV than anything else," Martins said.
Interestingly, the young people were asked about their consumption of print media, but the results were not statistically significant.
Martins conducted the research while she was completing her Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, as part of a larger longitudinal study done with her co-author, Harrison. They sought out certain school districts in Illinois because of their diversity, but African-Americans were the predominant minority group.

If you have an online business then you may be wondering how to advertise that business. One popular form of internet advertising is pay for click internet marketing, or also known as pay per click or PPC. Pay for click advertising is a great way for any business to reach a much targeted audience. Any business can use pay for click internet marketing to promote their business and be competitive with other businesses in your niche. With this type of advertising you will need to do keyword research and use targeted keywords.
With pay for click advertising you want to grab the attention of people that are searching the search engines. When someone searches for a particular keyword or phrase they are looking for the results that meet their requirements. You want your advertisement to grab their attention and give them the answer they are looking for. Pay per click advertising is basically placing an ad on the search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo so that people will see that ad when they type in what they are looking for.
When a person types in the phrase they want information on, they will be given pages of results. The top results are the ones that people will look at the most, as well as the ads that also appear on the results page. These ads are referred to as ?sponsored results? and they are shown based on the keywords that the advertiser has assigned to their ad.
Before placing your ad you need to do some keyword research and find which keywords or keyword phrases people are searching for most. When you know what people are searching for then you know which keywords to use for your ads to show up when they search. Your ads are then being shown to people who are interested in your niche and the keywords you are using. This is an effective form of advertising for businesses as it reaches a much targeted audience that are already interested in what you are offering.
When a person searches for the keywords that you have assigned to your ad, they may click on the ad and will be taken to your website or landing page. Whenever someone clicks on your ad you will be charged a certain amount. The amount charged per click will be determined based on the keywords that you use. The ads will not cost anything to appear if they aren?t being clicked, they will only incur a cost when a person clicks on the ad.
When you set up a pay for click internet marketing campaign you can control how much you will spend per day for your ad. You just enter a budget for the day, the keywords you want to use and the search engine will handle the rest. Your ads will be displayed until your budget for the day is reached at which time they will stop being displayed. Your ads will then begin to be displayed the next day.
The big benefit of this type of advertising is that you can control how much you spend and the ads are much targeted to a niche. Many small companies compete with large companies by using pay per click advertising. You can bid on your keyword phrase and the company that has the highest bid on a keyword will have their ad displayed highest in the results. If you are willing to pay enough for a keyword you can have a very highly displayed ad.
With pay for click internet marketing you should take your time and test different ads and different keywords. Sometimes you may find that your ads are not converting or getting many clicks and you will want to tweak them a little until you start seeing better results. It may take a few tries to get the right ad that will convert well and not cost the earth.
ScienceDaily (May 28, 2012) ? A unique new medicine that can start and accelerate healing of diabetic and other chronic wounds is being developed at Ume? University in Sweden. After several years of successful experimental research, it is now ready for clinical testing.
Behind this new medicine is a group of researchers at the Department of Medical Chemistry and Biophysics who have made the unique finding that the protein plasminogen is a key-regulator that initiates and accelerates wound healing by triggering the inflammatory reaction. Their discovery is now being published in the journal Blood.
?Today we have the knowledge needed to develop a medicine,? says Professor Tor Ny, one of the authors of the article. ?The bulk of the preclinical research has been completed, and we have had meetings with the Medical Product Agency to discuss a program for clinical testing.?
Plasminogen is a well-known plasma protein that is produced in the liver and found in all bodily fluids. The Ume? researchers have now re-assessed its role and managed to show that the concentration of plasminogen increases dramatically in and around wounds, which is an important signal to start the inflammatory reaction required for healing. In diabetic wounds the level of plasminogen does not increase in the same way, and this seems to be the reason why these wounds do not heal. In diabetic mice and rats the researchers were able to show that the healing process starts immediately when plasminogen is injected around the wound, which then heals fully.
A cell line for producing plasminogen on a larger scale has also been developed, and the goal is to start clinical testing as soon as funding can be arranged. The researchers have high hopes, as plasminogen is an endogenous protein that can be assumed not to produce side effects.
The need for a biologics for treating chronic wounds is urgent. Diabetic wounds that do not heal are the most severe type of chronic wounds, affecting millions of people annually. Many of the roughly 350 million diabetes patients in the world develop foot ulcers, and in 10-15 million cases this ultimately leads to amputation. Today?s treatment of diabetic wounds consists primarily of traditional wound care, with compresses and bandages; there is no effective medication.
The Ume? researchers are initially concentrating on diabetic wounds, but plasminogen also has great potential for working on other types of wounds. This includes tympanic membrane perforations and periodontitis. Being a pro-inflammatory activator, plasminogen has moreover been shown to be effective in combating antibiotic-resistant bacteria (MRSA).

Detroiter Kevin Rushing wants to use his gaming business, Krush Industries, in order to form a tighter-knit, collaborative community for young adults in the city. But the veteran is drawing on an unlikely source: his experience in the Marines.
"A lot of this came out of my experience coming home as a civilian with PTSD and finding more therapeutic ways to live and healthier lifestyle options," said Rushing, who went to Iraq with the Marine Corps in 2003 and 2004 . "I really think of games as the absolute opposite of warfare; it's collaboration."
The business, which Rushing launched with his brother last year, "started with an idea called 'Big Fun Place.'" The siblings wanted to bring gaming to Detroiters who were looking for new forms of entertainment.
"We don't really want to party hard, drinking and smoking and stuff ... there's a lack of entertainment options for young adults that are healthy and engaging," he said. "We started coming up with events and spaces that were appropriate and cool enough for adults."
As part of their mission, Rushing and his brother recently organized punk rock dodgeball at the Russell Industrial Center, and started trying to raise funds for an assault course based on the '90s television show "Gladiators."
The Rushings also received a CAMP Detroit grant to create an installation, called the Krush Arcade Experience, that will debut at this weekend's Movement Electronic Music Festival and will appear at other city events in the future. It is an arcade machine emulator loaded with old school arcade games, in a tent filled with lights and lasers for an '80s vibe.
"We both really love Detroit and are passionately involved in making it a successful community," Rushing said.
The veteran's ideas are also backed up by recent research, which has suggested that playing video games like Tetris may minimize flashbacks and other psychological symptoms following trauma.
Though the brothers plan future Krush Industries projects, Rushing is also digging into the psychology of gaming and its role in society. He's interested in how elements of gaming, like competitions and receiving incentives for completing tasks -- such as getting points for spending money on a credit card -- can be used in daily life.
"Entertainment will have to be more engaging and thoughtful," Kevin said about his vision of the future of Krush Industries. "There's an ethical portion to this and a community-forward portion that we think will make it more than just an entertainment facility."
For Rushing, his dedication stems from his positive experience with gaming, whether in training competitions with the Marines, arcades or Gladiator challenge courses.
"The thing about playing games and competing," he said, "is you lose yourself in it."

EDMONTON - Fresh off of his team?s charter flight home from the Memorial Cup, Derek Laxdal had a look to him that he?d lost touch with in the last few months. He was relaxed.
The Edmonton Oil Kings head coach is out of playoff mode, albeit a little sooner than he?d have liked, but he was in good spirits on Friday afternoon, finally able to take in the incredible run his team has had this season.
?You know what, we?re very proud of our kids. It was an outstanding season,? Laxdal said. The Oil Kings overachieved through the spring, surging through the Western Hockey League playoffs all the way to a Game 7, home-ice championship victory over the Portland Winterhawks. They punched a ticket to Shawinigan, Que. for the Memorial Cup, but ran out of gas at the national junior hockey championship tourney. Their 6-1 loss to the host Shawinigan Cataractes on Thursday night sent them home with a 1-3 record.
That?s the only losing record the Oil Kings were associated with this year. They went 67-22-3-4 this year in their run to the Memorial Cup, posted the best regular-season record in the WHL and won their first everything (playoff game, series, conference title and league championship) since re-joining the league in 2007. None of that was lost on Laxdal, who patrolled the executive flight centre at Edmonton?s International Airport, patting his players on their backs and making sure they were in good spirits.
?You go 67-22 and whatever it was. You ask me at the start of the season, ?Coach would you take that?? I?d say, ?Yeah, no problem,?? he said.
?You look at our organization three years ago, it was 16 wins going into 67 wins with playoffs and playing for the Memorial Cup, Western Hockey League champions, you know, what a season.?
On-ice skills aside, the Oil Kings greatest asset this season was their resiliency. Third period deficits were rarely insurmountable, highly-touted opponents didn?t intimidate and even after rolling through to the WHL final with one loss, a 2-1 Winterhawks series lead couldn?t break the Oil Kings.
?Our group has really matured in the last two years and you could see that, just the way we play and the way we carry ourselves and the way the players have developed,? Laxdal said.
?We?re going to be gone for 2 ? months now and when they come back we?ll go, ?Wow have they ever matured.? We saw it last year in our players, the Keegan Lowes, the Griffin Reinharts, the Mitch Morozes.
?We?re really looking forward to training camp in August and putting some new pieces into the puzzle. We know what it takes to win in the Western Hockey League, now we get to step back a bit and say ?What does it take to win a Memorial Cup?? and if you look at St. John, you look at London, you look at Shawinigan it?s three pretty good hockey clubs that were built for that tournament.?
While the coach wouldn?t take his eyes off of what was attainable during the team?s playoff run, he said on Friday afternoon that his team ? at an average age of 17 ? years ? was built to peak next season.
?Our goal at the start of the season was to get deep into the playoffs and winning the Western Hockey League, obviously you want to do that, but next year?s our year,? he said. ?We?ve got 20 of the 25 guys coming back and this year?s experience is only going to help us going into training camp, it will make it that much easier for these guys coming back. ?They?ve been there. Now there are no excuses for not being there (again), right? These kids coming back can take these experiences and move forward next year.?
Barney Henderson, who learned to install insulation, explains how to put a fiberglass cover on pipes last week at the Denver Green Jobs Initiative, 3532 Franklin St. (Hyoung Chang, The Denver Post)
Before Barney Henderson began training at the Denver Green Jobs Initiative in July 2010, he had never heard of employment opportunities in heat and frost insulation. The past few years, Henderson, like other struggling Americans, dealt with the country's economic malaise on a daily basis as best he could.
"I'd work various day labor jobs here and there, but the money was never much and definitely never consistent," said Henderson, a native of Denver.
Tack on that he's black and has a nonviolent felony conviction from the early 1990s, and the 43-year-old quickly fell into the growing number of individuals that statistics show are chronically unemployed.
As President Barack Obama is set to deliver a nationally televised speech to Congress this evening that outlines a jobs plan to reduce the 9.1 percent national unemployment rate, here in Colorado the president faces a complex situation: high minority unemployment and a relatively minute expansion in the green-jobs initiative he has touted as a catalyst to combat unemployment.
Recently the Obama administration has garnered public backlash from members of the Congressional Black Caucus as unemployment among blacks nationwide surged to 16.7 percent in August, its highest level since 1984.
"The Congressional Black Caucus loves the president," said U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, a California Democrat and member of the caucus, at a job fair last month. "We're supportive of the president, but we're getting tired. .?.?. The unemployment is unconscionable."
The 2010 annual average for unemployment in Colorado was 9 percent. For blacks and Latinos, it was 13 percent. But Henderson has become a success story of sorts ? a minority who has found work from the president's efforts to combat unemployment through more green jobs.
Still, upward mobility in the green-job sector in Colorado is small and by most accounts is unlikely to put a substantial dent in unemployment.

2.8% of Colorado jobs green
According to a study released in July by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, 2.8 percent of Colorado jobs are green jobs.
Nationwide, clean-energy jobs account for 2 percent of employment, according to a nonpartisan Brookings Institution study released this summer.
This comes even after the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 ? which Obama signed into law at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science ? doled out hundreds of millions of dollars in Colorado to stimulate the green economy.
For example, the act provided a roughly $370 million loan guarantee last year to Abound Solar Manufacturing, making the Loveland-based company one of the top state recipients of stimulus funds.
The company was slated to create 300 jobs in Colorado from the money, but as of this month it had filled a little more than 80, said Becky Ellzey, marketing and communications director for Abound. The company also has a facility in Indiana that benefits from the loan.
U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., who sits on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said the president has been too exclusive in his push for green jobs.
"Any job is a good job in this economy, but the challenge is that the market will only create those jobs when it can bear them," Gardner said, who is a green-jobs supporter. "I think that the president believes that the government can create markets, when in actuality the fact is that the market will embrace these technologies when it's ready for them."
Initiative sprang from grant
Soon after Henderson heard about the creation of the green-jobs initiative that specifically targeted his northeast Denver neighborhood, he pounced on the opportunity to better himself and obtain the skills needed to find stable work.
The initiative sprang from a $3.6 million grant through the recovery act.
The intention of the grant money ? dispersed to the local nonprofit Mi Casa, which helped write the grant proposal ? is to train 500 northeast Denver residents in a two-year span for jobs in solar technology energy, green construction, energy efficiency and green-jobs administration.
When Henderson completed the program, which on average takes four weeks, he began working various contracting jobs doing insulation that paid about $17 an hour.
It was the highest hourly rate he had ever made.
"The skills I learned from the initiative were geared specifically toward the green-jobs field, and it's helped me," Henderson said.
But even as the initiative touts that by hiring disadvantaged groups employers can receive tax credits of up to $9,000 per hire, the percentage of individuals who graduate from the program and are employed is relatively low.
To date, 425 have graduated from the city's green-jobs initiative that began last year and ends in January 2012. Of that, 139 ? roughly 33 percent ? are now employed.
Green economy still young
Rick Lawton, the initiative's project manager, said the green economy remains in its infancy and represents a trend that is relatively new.
"What we're giving people are transferable skills that can be used in a green economy and beyond," he said.
Gardner adds that green jobs have tremendous potential in combating unemployment, as do more traditional energy opportunities, such as the extraction of natural gas.
"Here in Colorado and across the nation, we can't isolate our focus," Gardner said. "We have to utilize all our resources."

(TheNicheReport) ? Being a leasing agent in this economy can be challenging ? the work is just as hard as ever, demand for rentals is cutthroat, and the weak housing market isn?t helping with commissions. Whether you?re a pro at the top of your game or a beginner learning the ropes of real estate, it?s important to remember why you?re in the field and the perks that you just can?t get anywhere else.
You?re always learning. With each client comes a different set of personalities, wants, and needs to work with. Pair this with a constantly changing real estate market, and no two days are ever the same.
You have a flexible schedule. Being an agent gives you the freedom to set your own schedule and make time for family and personal life. Of course, how much you earn depends on how much you work, but that?s another perk of being your own boss.
Meet interesting people. You never know who your next client will be ? a pro poker player, comic artist, or sous chef? Getting to know the newcomers to the community and helping them get settled also builds your professional network.
You?re not attached to your desk. Okay, so maybe you have an unhealthy relationship with your smartphone. But on the flipside, you?re not chained to an office chair for 8 hours day staring at a computer screen. Instead, you could be at a showing or community event, or getting to know a client over coffee.
All that stress leads to excitement ? of signing a lease, that is. After marketing all those listings, scheduling showings, and drawing up paperwork, the victory of closing a lease comes with an adrenaline rush ? how?s that for motivation?

- I was in Atlanta, Georgia the past few days attending the American Urological Association?s (AUA) Annual Conference. While there we heard from the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) that it had ignored the voices of prostate cancer specialist, patients and patient advocacy organizations and that it was dancing to its own music by issuing a final ?D? recommendation for the PSA test. This recommendation is against the routine use of the PSA test for the early detection of prostate cancer; this news made headlines across the country.
Since the draft recommendation issued by the USPSTF in October 2011, I have communicated PHEN?s opposition against the draft ?D? recommendation. We stand firmly against this final recommendation and with many other organizations, prostate cancer specialists and some government agencies (see video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jIFcd8obfU&feature=g-upl) who accept data showing that the PSA test saves lives and is the major contributor to a decline of 49% in the prostate cancer death rate since the test has been used widely.
In a ?Town Hall Meeting? held at the AUA conference that included a representative of the USPSTF it was clear that any argument made in opposition to the USPSTF recommendation was simply ignored by it. The moderator asked for a show of hands of those that disagreed with the USPSTF?s position and nearly all hands were raised.
At the heart of the ?scientific evidence? used by the USPSTF to render its recommendation is the PLCO study. However the leader of this study, Dr. Gerald Andriole who participated on the panel for the Town Hall meeting has consistently stated his opposition to the conclusion that the USPSTF drew from this study and he supports the PSA test (see video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSouDkvH8cU&feature=relmfu). In addition, research experts emphatically point out that the PLCO data is too flawed to be used as the basis for a recommendation on the PSA test.
As I have pointed out since the PLCO study was released, African American men are not included in this study at a significant enough level that would allow the USPSTF to draw a conclusion on the effectiveness of the PSA test for Black men. However, the USPSTF has simply ignored this lack of data and included African American men and other high risk men in its final ?D? recommendation. This action was taken in spite of calls from congressional leaders, medical specialists and patient advocates that such action would be reckless and without a scientific basis.
With its ?D? recommendation, the USPSTF has issued a death sentence to those men that will need early detection of aggressive prostate cancer but will ignore their prostate health based on this recommendation.
PHEN will continue to focus on educating African American men about their prostate health and the importance of early detection of cancer. With a death rate 140% higher than for other men, Black men cannot simply ignore the killer within that is prostate cancer. PHEN will not be alone in its efforts as all of the organizations that focus on prostate cancer prevention, education and research that I have spoken with, strongly disagree with the USPSTF?s ?D? recommendation (see additional information below).
African American men should ignore the USPSTF recommendation against the use of the PSA test. PHEN?s guidance is based on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network ?Prostate Cancer Early Detection Guidelines? which calls for a baseline PSA test for African American and other high risk men at age 40 following a discussion with their doctor about screening for the early detection of prostate cancer.
The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) is an alliance of 21 of the world?s leading cancer centers. The NCCN guidelines are widely recognized by oncology clinicians and payors. The prostate cancer early detection guidelines stress the importance of involving the patient and informing him of the implications and potential consequences that may arise from the decision to embark on an early detection pathway.
I am privileged to serve as the patient advocate member of the NCCN ?Prostate Cancer Treatments Guidelines Committee? with the opportunity to work with some of the world?s leading prostate cancer medical and research specialists. In consultation with these leaders and others I will continue to provide my thoughts, information, and guidance to the families most impacted by prostate cancer.
